Professor Kakogawa and seven students visited Nisso Kogyo Co., Ltd in Uji city, Kyoto to observe the metalworking process. The visit began with an explanation of the company’s business details and an overview of their CAD/CAM systems. Following this the company demonstrated the metalworking process using machine tools such as machining centers which excited the students.
Recently universities have embraced 3D printers which create objects from ideas easily, cheaply, and safely. As a result students increasingly rely on 3D printing for their projects. 3D printing is excellent for rapid prototyping; however, metalworking remains crucial due to its advantages in rigidity, processing accuracy, surface roughness and heat resistance. We learned about the importance of staying focused on our specific purposes and were also delighted to observe the fundamental principles of Japanese manufacturing. Thank you to Nisso Kogyo Co.,Ltd for providing us with this valuable experience.
